Qeqertalik (Community with islands)

The community was changed into Kommune Qeqertalik in 2018.

The grand national community plan was established in 2009 when the community was transformed to Qaasuitsoq Kommune (The community of Qaasuitsoq = one in dark times), and it is stretched from Qaanaaq to Aasiaat.

Now Kommune Qeqertalik has 4 towns, which are: Kangaatsiaq, Qasigiannguit, Qeqertarsuaq, Aasiaat, and it has 8 villages/settlements, which are: Akuunnaaq, Kitsissuarsuit, Niaqornaarsuk, Ikerasaarsuk, Iginniarfik, Attu, Kangerluk, Ikamiut.`ui8

Population

There are approx. 6.029 inhabitants in the community.

The culture

Kommune Qeqertalik has national and international well-recognized musicians such as: Inneruulat, Ole Kristiansen, Qeqquaq, Tikaaq trio, Ado Lynge, Unnuaq Band, Mariina, Kammasukkut, Olsen Kids. NIPIAA Rockfestival was established in 1999, and it is well-known and well-liked by the people. There are other artists too, and paintings and works by Per Kirkeby can be found in the museum in Aasiaat, and they are worth millions. And last but not least, timeless works by Ole Brandt, such as: Qooqa, and Taseraq Pingajuallu, which has been translated into multiple languages – and there are other written books, which has not been translated yet, which are: Aqattaq & Ippiarsuup Imai.

The characteristics of settlements and houses

School for girls in Aasiaat “Aasianni Arnat atuarfiat” was established in 1933, and it was a starting point and new times for women back then.
Angakkussarfik (The place for shamans) was established in 1906. And it was renovated in 1992 and since then used as a museum and been called “The museum of Qeqertarsuaq”.

The first boarding school “Villads Villadsen Boarding School” was established in 2009 in Qasigiannguit.

The oldest house in Greenland, which was built in 1734 is now been used as a museum. And is well-used by locals in “Lively town”-project.

Qeqertalik Business Council

Qeqertalik Business Council A/S was established by the community and is a link for the business world, turisme and innovation for the community.
The business council will be a voice of a strong and sustainability business world in Qeqertalik, and will be cooperationg with entrepreneurs and established corporations, with council and initiative will create development, growth and workingplace for the whole community.

Qeqertalik Business Council wants to strengthen turisme as a competent workingplace in advance for the community and turists, which gives the region an image as a wounderful place to live in, and drive workingplace and visitors.
