Located on the northern coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, Kemi is an industrial town in Finnish Lapland with strong connections to the surrounding Arctic region. Its economy has historically centered on forestry and paper production, and it remains home to one of Finland’s major pulp mills. Kemi also plays a role in maritime logistics, with an active port that supports regional trade and industry. The city is part of the Lapland region’s broader network of education and research, with links to Arctic policy and environmental monitoring. Culturally, Kemi maintains local traditions while also being known for contemporary events and public art, including its annual snow castle. Its location near the Swedish border also facilitates cross-border cooperation and cultural exchange.

The goal for Arctic Mayors’ Forum membership is to follow development and new ideas of Arctic cities and co-operation between Arctic cities.
