Tromsø: Get psychological first aid training

Learn how to give Psychological First Aid on October 22!

How do you support a classmate who is going through a crisis? What do you say to a friend who is at risk of suicide?

You can learn how to support those around you when they are struggling by providing Psychological First Aid. Psychological First Aid is a method used by the Red Cross in many parts of the world. The method provides ordinary people with the tools to help others who are experiencing a mental health crisis or distress. It is rooted in acknowledging others, listening, and offering presence and care – you do not have to be a psychologist or therapist to help. The Psychological First Aid workshop at Tvibit allows you to learn how to respond when those around are experiencing a crisis.

When: Icebreaker-dinner on October 21, workshop from 12:00-16:00 October 22.

Where: Tvibit

Who is the workshop for? Young people between 16 and 35 motivated to learn more about Psychological First Aid.

What is it about? In the workshop you will learn about Psychological First Aid and practice how to give it to anyone in crisis – in your circle of friends, at school, university, or work.

We will explore:

  • Psychological First Aid and compassionate peer-to-peer support
  • The effects of crisis, stress, and grief
  • Presence, listening, and care as guiding principles
  • The difficult conversation

Part of the courses involves practicing difficult conversations, using your own experiences as a starting point. This provides you with a useful tool when you encounter someone in need of Psychological First Aid and compassionate support.

Who is organizing this and why?

The workshop is a collaboration between Tromsø Municipality, KRK Inua, and the Arctic Mayors’ Forum. Mental health is one of the priorities of TrueNorth 2026, and a challenge in many Arctic communities. The Greenlandic Red Cross for youth (KRK Inua) has trained over 800 young people in Psychological First Aid in Greenland and is excited to share the approach with young people across the Arctic. The Arctic Mayors’ Forum connects Arctic communities that work on shared challenges such as strengthening mental well-being and supports the exchange of knowledge and the development of solutions. The workshop is part of the Enhancing Northern Connectivity project, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
